et chef d’orchestre US né le 14 Octobre 1922 à Newby (Oklahoma). Jimmy
Liggins débuta comme boxeur professionnel à l'âge de 18 ans sous le nom de Kid
Zulu, puis il quitta la boxe pour devenir manageur de son propre frère, Joe
Liggins, lors d'une tournée. En 1947, suivant les pas de son frère, Jimmy
Liggins commença sa propre carrière musicale comme chanteur, guitariste et
leader du groupe 'Drops Of Joy', sur le le label d’Art Rupe, Specialty Records.
L'un de ses premiers titres sortis, "Cadillac Boogie" fut le précurseur de
"Rocket 88", souvent reconnu comme le premier album de Rock'n Roll. En
enregistrant des titres comme "Tear Drop Blues" et, plus tard, "Drunk"
conjointement avec de grands saxophonistes comme Maxwell Davis, il devint l'un
des musiciens les plus reconnus durant la période Jump Blues de la fin des
années 1940 jusqu'au début des années 1950. Il quitta le label Specialty en
1954, en enregistrant "I Ain't Drunk", plus tard reprise par Albert Collins sur
le label Aladdin Records, avant de quitter peu à peu la scène musicale. Jimmy
Liggins est décédé le 18 Juillet 1983 à Durham (Caroline du Nord).
Another of
the jump blues specialists whose romping output can be pinpointed as a direct
precursor of rock & roll, guitarist Jimmy Liggins was a far more aggressive
bandleader than his older brother Joe, right down to the names of their
respective combos (Joe led the polished Honeydrippers; Jimmy proudly fronted the
Drops Of Joy). Inspired by the success of his brother (Jimmy toiled as Joe's
chauffeur for a year), the ex-pugilist jumped into the recording field in 1947
on Art Rupe's Specialty logo. His "Tear Drop Blues" pierced the R&B Top Ten the
next year, while "Careful Love" and "Don't Put Me Down" hit for him in 1949. But
it's Liggins' rough-and-ready rockers -- "Cadillac Boogie," "Saturday Night
Boogie Woogie Man," and the loopy one-chord workout "Drunk" (his last smash in
1953) -- that mark Liggins as one of rock's forefathers. His roaring sax section
at Specialty was populated by first-rate reedmen such as Harold Land, Charlie "Little
Jazz" Ferguson, and the omnipresent Maxwell Davis. Liggins left Specialty in
1954, stopping off at Aladdin long enough to wax the classic-to-be "I Ain't
Drunk" (much later covered by Albert Collins) before fading from the scene.
