born Robert William Lane on August 30, 1916 in
Nelson (New Zealand). Although country music is
predominantly American, a healthy, and in many Ways similar, scene developed in
Australia. The New Zealander, Robert William Lane, at the age of 15 ran away
from home and, adopting the name Tex Morton, busked for a living. In 1932, he
emigrated to Australia Where, in addition to singing, he became a magician,
trained wild animals, Worked in travelling shows, fought as a booth fighter
and even rode the Wall of Death. He worked on the installation of the lighting
on Sydney Harbour Bridge. As With many Australians, the yodelling was an
integral part of his singing and after first recording
in 1936, he became nationally known as Tex Morton the Yodelling Boundary Rider.
ln 1949, he relocated to the States where he toured as The Great Doctor Robert
Morton - The Wor1d’s Greatest Hypnotist. Later he toured the States and Canada
with his one-man show doing songs, recitations, mind reading and hypnotism. He
appeared in films as Robert Morton and
continued to record into the 1970s. By the time of his death in
July 23, 1983,
he had recorded over 1000 songs, one of the most popular being "The Yodelling
Bagman" (1936).
